Nuevo Caballo

We’re gearing up for UNICON this summer, where the XC race placement will be based on the number of loops you can do on a 3.7km course with 200m of climbing within 75 minutes. Let’s see, averaging 10km/hour, that’d be…three loops. 11.1km. 600m of climbing. At race pace.

Ouch.

Well, there’s no training like MUni training, so on Father’s Day we headed out to one of the best XC training loops in the Bay Area, Camp Tamarancho over in Fairfax. It was a beautiful day out there, and we got to try out the new Caballo Rojo exit trail, which has some dramatic berms. Definitely a fun addition.

We had new father Josh, along with the father-son combo of Nikolay (on bike) and Kostya. It was warm but not too hot. The trails were in pretty good shape, and it looks like they’ve been getting a lot of use, because the serpentine in the rock gardens was all polished smooth. [That’s my excuse for not cleaning those sections. Uh, and I’m still getting used to my new uni. Yeah, that’s it.]

Nikolay won First Blood from a pedal bite or two. I probably got Best Biff, but not very impressively, failing to get over some root on an uphill.

Totals for the day came out to 20.5km, 511m climbing. Phew. Maybe I’ll only do two laps in Steyr.

Four more weeks!
